Halloween is Back - What's your scary Idea?
31st of October is just around the corner and people among all age groups are busy planing for ideas for this years Halloween celebrations. Children are equally excited and they have their own plans to prank friends or wild speculations of tricks or treats. For whatever reason, October is the time in the year, when you see everyone marching on roads, organizing feasts and spending time with the families on the great eve of Halloween. Whether you are planning to create a zombie land for your children or plan to march on the roads in zombie outfits, whether you would create fancy scare-crows on your doors or help to create a bigger one for entire street. The festival allows you to follow all your wild imaginations, creativity and innovation. No wonder this would be the best time of the year just before the winters starts in Canada too.
A Little History
The early celebrations of the festivals were observed among the Celtic people who worshiped the Sun God and the Samhain God – the lord of the dead. The Celtic people marked the day as the start of the winter and end of the harvest season. There was a superstition that the transition of the seasons would open up the doors to the dead. They believed that the God Samantha would assemble all the dead souls and they would roam the earth in animal bodies. In order to strengthen the Sun God in this dark hour, the Celtic people would burn bonfires on hills, sacrifice animals and burn crops as a tradition. Later in the 18th century, while people started realizing the myth of such superstitions, they gave up the belief of dead visiting back, however, started dressing like ones and have fun. It varies with time and reached the current state where Halloween is all about spooky costumes, children fun games ‘Trick-or-Treat’, Jack-o’-lantern, playing pranks and visiting haunted attractions with official Halloween colors – Orange and Black!

What’s Your Plan this October?
The festival is more important for me as it unfurls so many memories from my childhood – the innocent friendships, weird fun ideas, funny pranks and most important the people and friends with whom I have shared all these memories. There is a little one insight me who deep inside crave to go back to the same time and enjoy again as if there was no tomorrow – and suddenly I realize that it is not possible anymore, moreover, I am changed man who has moved on in his life, but it soothes you in many ways to cherish those childhood memories and even sometimes prepare you for next phase – doesn’t matter what?
Why I have put this point on the table? Whenever I think of Halloween – I remember more the happy times, emotions, friends, memories and remember less about places, costumes or other Halloween symbols. So why not when thinking of the year’s Halloween idea – plan something for our children that they carry along themselves for the rest of their lives – a good memory/a warm gesture of love and compassion.
- Arrange treats in any nearby orphanage – let your younger ones give away the treats and allow the feeling of compassion overwhelm their hearts.
- Arrange some home-modified costumes for some homeless people and allow them to have a taste of this Halloween with love and compassion.
- I have also heard of reverse trick or treat. Why not share treats/gifts among neighbors, friends or someone who has been most creative in his/her costumes or home decorations etc. It will be a very warm gesture to share love with more and more people and motivate them to create something more extraordinary for next time.
- We have seen people decorating homes or some places in horror theme – why not to put some history in this year’s theme and try to get your children know about the roots of this great festivals. I am sure, Halloween is not just about dressing weird or painting faces. There is a deep meaning behind this festival and our little ones actually understands that before getting into today’s mode is more important.
What different can be done?
Jack-o’-lantern
We must have heard of it the carved lantern of a pumpkin or a turnip. The pumpkins are made hollow by scooping out inside flesh and place a light source to expose the monstrous or comical faces in front. Just imagine, how many Pumpkins would have been scooped out to get a perfect Jack-o’-lantern. Why not this year we plan ahead and keep a common utensil to collect the inside material of the pumpkins. The roasted pumpkin seeds account for a healthy treat, however, a common dish can be prepared with it and have the entire society/village a feast just like old times. With the current innovations and technology, we tend to miss on the very basic power of humane beings – the power of sharing. We shared knowledge and eventually we are at a position where we don’t like to share anything anymore. I guess, it would be just about the right time educate our children of the very basic gesture of sharing and the enormous self satisfaction that one can receive with it.
Trick-or-Treat
No wonder, this would be the most amazing thing for the children. The basic idea is to visit neighbors and ask for a trick-or-treat. Later in the evening, the children in their costumes would ring the doorbells of neighbors and ask for trick-or-treating. They obliged either by showing a trick or giving treats to children in form of candies or chocolates. Or do you have something else to share while someone rang your bell expecting to receive a treat just like the last year? Well, I will leave this up to you that you would like to surprise kids in your neighborhood this year. The basic idea would be to enlighten them with the history of the festival, show them the power of sharing, love and compassion and allow them to discover their own fun facts so that once they will grow up and would think of their Halloween adventures, they would have a lot of memories to cherish and withhold for the rest of the lives.
There are not many days left and deep inside that little prankster in you is getting agitated to do something new this Halloween. Don’t just hold on to yourself and let your imaginations overcome your rational thoughts this time. However, if somehow rather participating in stupid Zombie walks and scary fashion parades, we could spread the message of love, compassion and power of sharing this Halloween – it would have an ever lasted impact on our personalities. Signing off with all these thoughts and I guess it is time for me to come out of my childhood as well. Merci!
